In March 2009, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that torch relays for all future Olympic Games will be held within the host city.
However, an exception has been made for Singapore 2010. Being the first YOG, it is important that the spirit of Olympism reach out to as many youth as possible around the world. And the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) will be the link that connects the youth of the world to the Olympic movement.
According to Olympic tradition, the JYOF will start its journey in Greece. In July 2010 the first Youth Olympic Flame will be lit in Greece. The Flame will then travel to one city in each of the five continents, namely:
•Berlin, Germany, representing Europe •Dakar, Senegal, representing Africa •Mexico City, Mexico, representing the Americas •Auckland, New Zealand, representing Oceania •Seoul, Republic of Korea, representing Asia At each city, the Youth Olympic Flame will travel to iconic sights in the city, before ending the day with a city celebration. The people of each continent, especially the youth, will be invited to the Celebration City to celebrate the arrival of the Youth Olympic Flame to their continent.
The Youth Olympic Flame will then travel to Singapore, where the journey continues through the five community districts with a traditional round-island torch relay, ending each relay day with a community celebration.
The Youth Olympic Flame will be lit at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on 14 August 2010, marking the commencement of the first YOG.
This coming Sunday, 20 Jun, is Father's Day. I have a video clip here related to family togetherness. It's touching and heartwarming.
The video was produced by Malaysia in 2006, and is surprisingly in Hokkien, instead of Cantonese. For those who don't understand, this is the scenario:
Four women are having their lunch in, I believe, an old folks home. Three of them are bragging about how capable their children are.
Woman 1 (Ah Hoon): Her children are all very busy with their work. Her daughter is a lawyer, while her son runs a business dealing with lingzhi, a medicinal fungi. He does business with the government, and has businesses in America and Hong Kong, and he even knows Andy Lau. Her son has also bought a house in Damansara, an up-scale and affluent residential estate.
Woman 2: Her son is a specialist in London, who earns £20k for each operation. He does two a day. (£1 = S$2.06, take £20000 x 2.06 to derive the equivalent SGD)
Woman 3: Her daughter works in a big and famous audit firm, and has some shares in it, but the woman doesn't know the name of the firm. Her daughter earns RM$450k annually. (S$1 = RM$2.33, take RM$450000/2.33 to derive the equivalent SGD)
Woman 4 (Eng): This is the humble and most fortunate one. When asked about her son, she said that he was good and was coming to pick her up. He will bring her along wherever he takes his family to.
A car then turns in, car-ful of her grandchildren and daughter-in-law. They have come to take her to Cameron.
We don't wait till Mother's Day or Father's Day to show that we care by buying them any present. This is not what they want.
Show it in your daily deeds, by being a caring and filial son or daughter. It's that simple, and the best gift to them. (",)
P.S. In Singapore, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
I was at Changi T3 to join in the fun of seeing this bunch of kiddos off to Japan. Their flight was at 11.45pm, and I saw Xuan Yun & ShiHui standing near Row 3 when I arrived at 9.30pm. They didn't see me though. XD
Yu Kang and his family appeared minutes later, to send his P4 brother off. Her mama said that she was not aware that P6 pupils could go, else Yu Kang would have been flying to Japan now. =(
I am sure the trip will be a fun and memorable one. (",)
